Until 31st August the documentary exhibition Michelangelo Guggenheim (1837-1914): antiquarian, art dealer, furniture and decorative art objects collector and designer, curated by Alice Martignon, will be open to the public in the Sala Nera of Villa Monastero. It illustrates the figure of Moisè Michelangelo Guggenheim, the most important antiquarian and art dealer in Venice of the second half of XIX century, who designed for Walter Erich Jacob Kees the darkened walnut wood furniture that, still today, gives this room its typical atmosphere.

Through unpublished documents, photos, letters, publications, newspaper articles, objects from his collection (drawings, engravings, prints, handiworks and fabric pieces), the exposition reveals his life and work, which includes trade in antiquities and art (ancient and modern), collecting, enterprise and furniture and decorative art objects design, without excluding his role as promoter of art and industry education, expert, historian and philanthropist.

The exhibition can be visited during the opening hours of the House Museum.

Vie d'acqua tra '800 e '900: pictures of the Lake and the Adda River in local private collections

From Saturday 20th June to Sunday 30th August Villa Monastero and the “Rosa and Marco De Marchi” Room in Varenna will host the exhibition Vie d’acqua tra ‘800 e ‘900: immagini del Lario e dell’Adda nelle collezioni private lombarde, sponsored by the Province of Lecco in collaboration with the Varenna Municipality, on the occasion of Expo 2015.

The exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 9:30 am to 7 pm at Villa Monastero, from 10:30 am to 12:30 am and from 3:30 pm to 6:30 pm in the De Marchi Room.

The exhibition, curated by Anna Ranzi, presents a rich collection of paintings (more than one hundred), belonging to private collectors from Lecco and the whole Lombardy, that illustrate the evocative landscape of Lake Como and, in particular, of the eastern branch of the lake. Paintings showing Lake Como are placed side by side with interesting pictures representing the Adda River and with others representing lakes and rivers in Brianza. They are the work of important and significant authors who worked in the area of Lecco during the 19th and the 20th centuries, with particular attention to local authors. Paintings by Gozzi, Canella, Carcano, Prinetti, Lelli, Jotti, Calvi, Spreafico, Grubicy, Cressini, Poma, Bezzi join a great number of paintings by Pizzi, Todeschini, Sora, Gennai, Zago, Monti, Castiglioni, Mozzanica, and finally the Vitali from Bellano. The displayed works are mostly unknown and at their first appearance in a public exhibition, thanks to the generosity of many private collectors.

The exhibition is divided into three sections arranged according to the chronological order: the early 19th century is in the House Museum Villa Monastero, the late 19th century in the Exhibition Room of Villa Monastero and the 20th century in the “Rosa and Marco De Marchi” Room in the town hall of Varenna.

The event has been realised thanks to Family Banker Office Lecco of Banca Mediolanum, that also gave Villa Monastero two important “Views of Venice” as a gift last year, and thanks to Paolo Cattaneo Editore from Oggiono, who published the catalogue of the exhibition.

The Golden apple: a journey through the concept of beauty

On Sunday 31st May, at 5:30 pm, the exposition The Golden Apple will be inaugurated in the Exhibition Room of Villa Monastero. It will be open to the public every day from 10:30 am to 4:30 pm until 14th June

Golden Apple is a cultural project that aims to explore the idea of beauty through stimulant connections between literature and contemporary art.
Visitors will be guided in this evocative journey by the the gaze and the artworks of 8 artists from different parts of the world: Antonella Goatin (Italy), Sachiyo Kaneko (Japan), Lesley Oldaker (Switzerland), Tomas Tzen (Germany), Irena Orlov (USA), Natalie Matvijenkova (Czech Republic), Ilze Laizane (Latvia), Hanna Pyrzynska (Polony).

Throughout human history the concept of beauty has always been defined in relation to stereotypes and categories that vary according to personal, historical and cultural backgrounds. The exhibition, then, wants to induce a reflection on the meaning of human existence itself. It invites us to open the gates of our minds to understand that what we are today is the result of an evolution that also passes through art and beauty and through the pleasant and inspiring emotions aroused by them.
