Villa Monastero is in Varenna, a picturesque town rich in artistic monuments on the eastern shore of Lake Como and traditionally popular tourist destination, even for the exceptional views and natural landscape. The country is dominated by a mountain, on whose summit stands an ancient castle (Castle Vezio).
Varenna's name is mentioned for the first time in 493, but the certainty of his existence is the 769 b.C. It seems however that its territory was already inhabited during the Bronze Final. The installation of the village, for its regularity and the space divided into insulae, would be probably of Roman origin; the church probably stands on the foundations of a Roman temple...
