Theatre Performance at Villa Monastero “La spartizione ovvero venga a prendere il caffè da noi”

On Sunday, September 14th at 8:30 PM, the Province of Lecco will host the theatrical performance La spartizione ovvero venga a prendere il caffè da noi at Villa Monastero in Varenna. This sparkling and entertaining comedy is inspired by the novel of the same name writted by Piero Chiara.

“It is a great pleasure to present this theatrical performance in the evocative setting of Villa Monastero,” comments Alessandra Hofmann, President of the Province of Lecco. “We want to offer citizens and visitors cultural events and performances to promote culture. Theatre is culture — it allows us to observe society from different perspectives and provides a valuable opportunity to share and discover stories, ideas, traditions, stereotypes, and lifestyles, even those from distant times.”

Reservations are required to attend the performance and can be made via the Villa Monastero theatre event link. The show is free and offered to visitors who purchase a ticket to visit the Garden on the day of the event. In case of bad weather, the event will be held in the Fermi Hall.

The Performance

The amusing and slightly “spicy” story of three spinster sisters who are courted by a seasoned local Don Giovanni. Based on one of the most beautiful and famous novels by the author from Luino, who masterfully captured the magic of our lakes and the microcosm of the Lombard province. The novel was later adapted into a successful film directed by Lattuada, featuring a superb performance by Tognazzi.

A lively and entertaining, yet emblematic and incisive, tale of three sisters who seem weighed down and condemned by their status as “ugly and aging spinsters.” According to certain societal standards, these women should be marked with an expiration date, excluded from the games of seduction and affection—destined to a sad fate of invisibility. However, in the TIM – Teatro in Mostra production, the ending is different and unexpected: a happy conclusion that celebrates female empowerment, sisterhood, and the ability to reclaim, in every sense, their bodies that are by no means expired!

Synopsis

Luino, late 1950s. Emerenziano Paronzini, a diligent civil servant and war veteran, reaching middle age still single, has solemnly decided to marry. His choice falls on Fortunata Tettamanzi, a wealthy but plain and no longer young woman who lives with her two equally plain younger sisters, Camilla and Tarsilla. The unexpected courtship of this determined suitor threatens the well-established family arrangement of the three spinsters, each determined to win his affection. The man will have no other choice but to accept the situation and be “shared” among the three.
